In 2002, EMAS Publishing was acquired by AEA Technology plc to
complement its fatigue test and simulation business.
Dr Clive Richards and John Edwards will continue to be involved
in the business.
Engineering Materials Advisory Services Ltd was established in 1979
by Dr Clive Richards and Dr Jim Beevers to publish
the proceedings of a symposium held at Birmingham University, UK,
in May 1979 entitled 'The Measurement of Crack Length and Shape
during Fracture and Fatigue'. This was so successful (selling over
1000 copies) that it is still in print some 17 years later. It was
subsequently decided to publish the proceedings of other conferences.
We now have produced over 76 publications including several commissioned
books.
When Jim Beevers retired from Birmingham University he sold his
interest in EMAS to John Edwards.

Dr Clive Richards graduated from Birmingham University in
1963 with a degree in Physical Metallurgy and went on to complete
his Ph.D. in 1966. After a year as a post doctoral fellow at Birmingham,
he spent 11 years at the Central Electricity Generating Boardıs
Central Electricity Research Laboratory, Leatherhead, Surrey, U.K.
He left the laboratory as a group leader in fatigue having published
23 papers.

After serving an engineering apprenticeship, John Edwards
joined the Royal Airforce as a fighter pilot. Following demobilisation
he joined Sir Armstrong Whitworth working on aircraft fatigue. In
1969 John founded Testwell Ltd, a contract testing laboratory, specialising
in the fatigue and fracture of materials, components and structures.
He joined GKN Technology Ltd's laboratory as head of the Product
Evaluation Centre and since 1991 has been a self employed consultant
in testing technology. John is a lead assessor National Accreditation,
Measurement and Sampling (NAMAS) in mechanical testing.
