on Aeronautical Fatigue held 5th to 9th May 2003, Lucern,
Switzerland.

The general theme of the Symposium was 'Fatigue of Aeronautical
Structures as an Engineering Challenge', with sessions devoted to
specific aspects, such as Loads Development; Loads Monitoring and
Structural Health; the Challenge of Full Scale Testing; Fatigue
Behavior of Aircraft Structures and Welded Structures; Fatigue and
Corrosion Damage; Fatigue Models; Simulation and Correlation; Repair
Solutions. Tthe first flight of the Wright Flyer had to be delayed
due to a fatigue problem. A hollow propeller shaft (hollow to reduce
weight) developed a fatigue crack. This incident took place only
100 year ago. Today, we have made a lot of progress in the fatigue
design, but it is still an important issue in the aerospace industry.
A lot of airplanes are flying above there design life, and structural
integrity has to be maintained.
